Growing up in the Rocky Mountains, Leiko was enchanted by the quiet moments in nature – watching bears eating apples in the orchard, swimming in glacier-fed lakes, and hiking the snowy bowls in search of that perfect sit spot in the afternoon sun. Leiko brings the same awe and wonder to Earth Path’s programs, sharing in the delight of her small friends’ explorations.
In 2007, Leiko home-schooled her two daughters and lived off-the-grid in Costa Rica, where the jungle was their backyard and they practiced permaculture. Since returning to Canada, Leiko has studied and practiced child-led, emergent learning for many years, inspired particularly by the Reggio Emilia Approach. Leiko ran a forest-based preschool and summer camp program near Wakefield, and has taught in Earth Path programs since 2016.
As a mentor, Leiko embraces the role of facilitator, following children’s curiosity and helping them explore their ideas and questions. An artist and intuitive learner herself, she easily adapts to meet the different learning and communication styles of her students. Optimistic and encouraging, Leiko is often heard saying “sure, we can build anything!”
